Product : Evolution of the Apple iMac

The Apple Imac has gone through some amazing changes since it’s inception in
1998, since then it has been the primary part of Apples consumer offerings & has
evolved through seven distinct forms.
When Imac was announced in 1998 it was received with alot of controversy
among commentators, Mac fanatics and opposers.
Consumers thoughts were divided over Apple's major changes to the Macintosh hardware. At that particular juncture in time, Apple had
endured a number of setbacks as the consumer increasingly went for for Wintel
(Windows PCs) computers instead of Apple's Performa models.
A number of people in the industry believed that "besieged Apple" would soon be driven to begin selling computers with a custom interface structured on top of one or more potential operating system bases, similar to Taligent, Solaris or Windows 98’.
Improving its retail strategy defenitely played a part in Apple's effort to maintain the Mac platform and in succeeding in this, Apple secured a deal with CompUSA to establish a "store within a store" section at many CompUSA retail outlets.
With the growth of these stores, however, Apple sales received a hit, as CompUSA staff were not knowledged on the Macintosh and in turn tended to upsell Wintel boxes
instead.
The name “iMac” was originally coined by Ken Segall, who was an employee at a Los Angeles advertising agency who did Apple's advertising at the time.
Jobs had mixed feelings on the name “iMac”when Segall originally pitched it to him,
he wanted the product to be called "MacMan", but slowly came around & went with  Segall's suggestion. Segall says that the "i" stands for “Internet” [1], but also represents the product as a personal and revolutionary device ('i' for "individuality" and
"innovation"). The “i” prefix was later used by Apple across its consumer hardware and
software lines, such as iPod, iBook (later MacBook ) iPhone, iPad and numerous
pieces of software such as the iLife suite and iWork and the company's media
player/store, iTunes.

Here’s a snippet from a current iMac marketing campaign. (below)

iMac
The vision is
brighter
than ever.

“A desktop experience that draws you in and keeps you there.
This is the idea behind today’s iMac. And now that idea is more
powerful than ever. The new iMac is packed with all-new
processors, the latest graphics technologies, innovative storage
and higher-bandwidth connectivity. And it all comes to life on
the brightest and most colourful Retina display iMac has ever
seen. So you get an even more immersive experience — and a
scintillating new way to take it all in.” [2]
It had become more and more clear, by 2005, that IBM's development for the
desktop contingent of PowerPC was rapidly slowing down.
At the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced that it would be switching the CPU’s to the x86 architecture and Intel's line of Core processors.
The unveiling of the first Intel-equipped Macs was on January 10, 2006: this included the Intel iMac and the introductory MacBook Pro. Within nine months, Intel hardware had been successfully tested & installed into the entire Macintosh line of personal computers.
The ability to run Windows on Mac hardware was a huge benefit that came along with this switch in CPU’s. Apple’s 21.5-inch iMac 2017, which has a full HD resolution
display and the latest Intel 7th generation i5 processor, was announced on June 6, 2017.
Over the years iMac has received extensive critical acclaim, this includes praise from the esteemed technology columnist Walt Mossberg as the "Gold Standard of desktop computing" [3]; Forbes magazine described the original candy-colored line of iMac computers as being an "industry-altering success" [4].
Since its inception the Imac has been a mammoth success for Apple Inc. It is a staple in their product range & I foresee it being, an ever evolving, personal computer for the future.
